Turkey Peace: PKK disarmament process marks a significant step toward lasting peace

The PKK disarms and destroys weapons in a determined effort to promote peace and stability

The PKK has been fighting Turkey since 1984, but now, after a call from their leader, Abdullah Ocalan, who is in prison, they have decided to stop fighting and work towards peaceful politics and laws.

Ocalan said that this change is very important and means they are moving from violence to peaceful ways of solving problems. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that Turkey is starting a new chapter because the Kurdish group called the PKK is beginning to give up their weapons after fighting for over 40 years, which caused many people to get hurt or lost loved ones. Erdogan told his political party that the problem of violence and fighting is coming to an end.

He said, “Decades of sadness, tears, and trouble are over. Turkey has turned a new page.” He also said that today is a new day and a fresh start for Turkey. Recently, in a cave in northern Iraq, 30 PKK members burned their guns and weapons to show they are serious about stopping their fight against Turkey.

A leader of the PKK, Bese Hozat, read a message saying they are destroying their weapons on purpose to show they want peace.

Erdogan told his political party that the problem of terrorism is coming to an end and that Turkey is turning a new page in its history. He said that yesterday marked the beginning of a new, stronger Turkey, and today is a fresh start.

Recently, in a cave in northern Iraq, 30 PKK members burned their guns as a symbol of ending their fighting against Turkey. During a special event, a PKK leader named Bese Hozat read a statement saying they are voluntarily destroying their weapons to show they want peace.

The PKK has been fighting with Turkey since 1984. But now, they have decided to stop fighting and to work peacefully through politics and laws. Their leader, Abdullah Ocalan, who is in prison in Turkey, called this a big and important step toward peace.
