BANGLADESH: Government working to transform Bangladesh into a trillion-dollar economy: Tarique Rahman

Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said that the BNP government is working to transform the country into a trillion dollar economy by 2034.

He urged domestic and foreign entrepreneurs and investors to take new initiatives and expand business in Bangladesh.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said, “Our government is determined to transform Bangladesh into a trillion dollar economy by 2034.”

He said, specific incentives have been ensured for special priority sectors in our budget. These include renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, electronics, digital services, agro-processing, advanced textiles, healthcare and logistics.

He also said that we are establishing Bangladesh as a large production hub in the world. Diversifying our readymade garment industry and prioritizing technology and skills required for human resource development.

He said these things at the FDI conference organized by Foreign Investors Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI or FICI) at the Bangladesh China-Friendship Conference Center this afternoon.

The FICCI FDI Conference 2026 on ‘Accelerating Foreign Investment for Employment and Prosperity in Bangladesh’ started with the National Anthem. A video is then displayed.

At the conference, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman urged investors to invest new capital in Bangladesh. He also assured all kinds of cooperation from their side in this initiative.

Tarique Rahman said, the new and visionary BNP government wants you to come to Bangladesh, take new initiatives and expand business.

He said, whether domestic entrepreneurs or foreign investors, if you invest capital in Bangladesh, the government will support you through institutional cooperation and timely policies. This is not just an assurance, it is a concrete commitment from our government.

The Prime Minister said that there are some challenges in front of Bangladesh. But besides that we have endless possibilities and strong foundations. We have a rapidly developing large domestic market, a pool of young and hardworking human resources, strategic geographical location and an elected government with absolute popular support. Together, these forces are moving Bangladesh towards a sustainable and permanent prosperity.

Our main goal, he said, is to build a well-defined rules-based economy linked to the global economy and driven by the dynamics of the private sector. Our election manifesto provides a clear and precise outline of this economic transformation.

Tarique Rahman said, we are not only calling you to invest in Bangladesh, but also to be a trusted partner with us in implementing this vision.

The Prime Minister said, our new government has completed five months of assuming office. But our economic and political preparations began long before the elections. We listened carefully to investors, entrepreneurs, business chambers, economists, development partners and policy-makers.

He said their main message was very clear. They said, strong legal protection of investment, modern and business-friendly regulatory framework, simplified tax system, seamless process of withdrawal of earned profits, strong capital market and improved infrastructure are needed to increase foreign direct investment in Bangladesh.

Tarique Rahman said, so we are taking your words seriously. I started working accordingly.

He said, we are modernizing our legal and regulatory framework. Strengthening investor protection. Besides, we are improving the system of quick dispute resolution. Simplifying tax and VAT administration and hassle-free repatriation of profits after earning.

At the same time, he said, we are creating a dynamic capital market, encouraging startups, eliminating unnecessary regulations and red tape, simplifying administrative processes and digitizing government services.

Apart from this, he also said to ensure greater investment in renewable energy as well as ports, logistics infrastructure and overall energy security.

About 600 distinguished representatives from home and abroad have participated in this international conference in Dhaka. In attendance were senior government officials, policy makers, representatives of regulatory agencies, diplomats, development partners, executives of multinational companies, investors, business leaders and media persons.

FICCI President and Berger Paints Bangladesh Managing Director (MD) Rupali Haque Chowdhury gave the opening speech at the conference.

Tarique Rahman said that the future of Bangladesh does not only depend on attracting investment, but also on building lasting and reliable partnerships.

He said, I urge every business leader present here to be a part of that potential future. Together we can build an economy that is strong, fair and inclusive.

Tarique Rahman said, “Looking at this auditorium today, I can see the brilliant presence of the most talented corporate heads, successful investors and distinguished experts of the country and the international arena. Many of you have chosen Bangladesh as your prime destination for business expansion and new investment.

Appreciating the investors, he said, ‘This initiative of yours has created new jobs, introduced modern technology, enriched the global supply chain and, above all, continues to contribute immeasurably to the economic progress of Bangladesh. For that, I express my sincere gratitude to you.

The Prime Minister said, I myself started my career as a businessman before entering politics. I have learned from my practical experience that any business cannot succeed solely on the basis of entrepreneurial skills or political assurance, a large part of business success depends on the growth-supportive policies of the government.

He said, I invite you all to invest in Bangladesh and open new horizons of success. Let us move forward together on the path of prosperity, create new jobs and build a new Bangladesh of the future.

The Prime Minister called upon all to be partners in this journey to build a prosperous and globally connected Bangladesh.

The conference discussed the opportunities and challenges in attracting foreign investment. Apart from this, the ‘Fake FDI’ report was unveiled. The report presents various analyses, observations and recommendations aimed at strengthening the investment environment in Bangladesh and accelerating sustainable economic growth.

The Prime Minister visited the Investors Expo before officially inaugurating the conference. He interacted with the representatives of participating companies and organizations.

Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, State Minister for Lands Barrister Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin, Ministry of Expatriates Welfare and Foreign Employment and Advisor to Ministry of Labor and Employment Mahdi Amin, President of FICCI and Managing Director (MD) Berger Paints Bangladesh Rupali Haque Chowdhury, BIDA Chairman Ashiq Chowdhury and local and foreign investors and representatives were present in the conference among others.
